When all the information i.e. name, date of birth, registered mobile number, bank details, Pan Card details, etc. are entered by the employer of an individual on the EPFO portal, UAN has generated automatically within 15 days from the date of registering data.
Generally, it is informed by the employer or HR department to the employee and if they have not informed, you should contact the employer to get it.
EPFO has facilitated the employer and also the employee to know the UAN online by using PF Member Sewa Portal You can also get your UAN number from PF number online.
What is EPF UAN?
Universal Account Number or UAN is a 12 digit identification number which is issued by the Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO).
It has been generated automatically by the EPFO server within 15 days, as soon as the employer enters the personal details of an employee.
As it is a unique identification number hence it remains valid throughout India whether an employee changes their job so many times in different companies and can link and view of his provident fund account with this UAN.
How to Get UAN number?
Follow the below process, step by step to know the EPFO UAN status online.
Step 1: Visit the official website of EPFO and select Services for Employees – One Employee – One EPF Account in the menu bar.
Step 2: After clicking the above One Employee-One EPF account option, the webpage will divert to the new official website of the EPFO Member Sewa Portal.
Step 3: Then click on the link “know your UAN” and open the link.
Step 4: This page will take you with the new webpage details and enter any Mobile Number with captcha(Please note that members can enter any Mobile No. registered Mobile No. or any other Mobile Number – to enter registered Mobile Number is not mandatory).
Step 5: After clicking on the same, an OTP will be sent on the above Mobile Number.
Step 6: Enter the OTP and then the website will display a new webpage.
Step 7: The new webpage requires some information – name, date of birth, Aadhar number/PAN Card/Member Id.
Step 8: Finally, you will have to submit the same by entering Captcha Code, and thereafter your UAN will be displayed on the screen.
UAN Password Format
A UAN is valid when it follows the below-given points:
- The password should be a minimum of 7 characters
- The maximum length of the UAN password must be 20 characters.
- It must have at least 1 capital letter and 1 small letter.
- UAN must have a minimum of 2 numerical digits.
- It must contain at least One special character, for example @, *, # …
- Password must contain a minimum of 4 alphabets

How To Get UAN Number Without Employer?
In the past, an EPF account holder had the option only to contact his or her employer who would generate the UAN after getting the relevant forms signed by the employee.
Thereafter, the employer had to submit the forms to EPFO for the generation of UAN and the employee shared the UAN with the employee.
Generally, the UAN is mentioned on the salary slips. If you do not know the same, you had the option of finding your UAN from the EPFO website – Know your UAN.
At present, you can generate your own UAN without the help of your employer subject to that you cannot keep more than one UAN.
If you or your employer have generated the other UAN that means, you are having two UANs. In this case, you have to cancel OR merge one UAN, as per the link on how to merge two different UAN.
Please note that when an employee joins the other company, he should inform their UAN to the employer immediately, otherwise, as and when the employer put the information into the EPFO system, 2nd UAN will be generated automatically within 15 days and create so many problems i.e transfer of EPF balance of the old company into a new company.

Steps To get UAN Number Without Employer
To generate a new UAN, you need to go to PF Member Portal and click on the option ‘Direct UAN Allotment by Employees’ on the bottom right side of the webpage. Those PF members who have had already UAN but want to know the number can click on “Know your UAN status.
After clicking on the Direct UAN Allotment by Employees, the webpage will take you a new page, where users will be asked to provide Aadhaar-linked mobile number and captcha code because UAN is connected with Aadhaar hence only Aadhaar cardholders with a registered mobile number are permissible to use this facility.
An OTP will be sent on the registered number to confirm the identity of the user and afterwards, a UAN is generated and sent to the mobile number with the password.
In this way, an employee can generate UAN by itself easily.
