A huge amount, about Rs.26497 crores, the unclaimed amount is lying idle in the inoperative  EPF accounts.

The reasons for this unclaimed amount are that – PF members or nominees do not know the procedure, how to file the claim after the death of the PF subscriber. No doubt, filing a  death claim is one of the most challenging tasks but the Employer provident fund organization makes sure that the deceased’s family will not meet financial trouble if the PF subscriber OR family members apply for such type of claims.

In this context, EPFO has launched two online facilities e-Nomination facility for filing nomination forms by the EPF members so that family dependents do now wander here and thereafter the death of the member.

Provision for EPF Withdrawal claim after the date of the beneficiary The e-Nomination facility is available on the PF Member Portal.  Any PF member having activated UAN and Aadhar seeded UAN,  can only avail of this online facility.

As and when EPF members log in to their account, e-nomination links come – File Now/Later OR you can select e-nomination, from the “MANAGE” icon of the webpage.

At the time of entering E-nomination, you must have the following documents of your family members- Wife, Sons and Daughter/Father-Mother/Guardian.

  1. Aadhar Card
  2. Date of Birth
  3. Address
  4. Bank Account details
  5. Passport size photo

In case of the demise of the PF member, the beneficiary or nominee can submit his claim for PF withdrawal, Pension, and EDLI  claim through PF Member Portal online.

In the past, Nominee or beneficiary/legal heirs had to submit Death claims to the member’s employer or the EPFO in offline mode only but now EPFO has prescribed a single Composite Claim Form for all types of claims – withdrawal of Funds/Pension/EDLI if the subscriber/nominee want to lodge the claim offline.

Please note that Composite Form is a single Form for all claims in place of  Form 20, EPS Pension 10D, and  EDLI Claim  Form 51F) and you can lodge your claim as you deem fit.

After the expiry of the PF member, his beneficiary or Nominee can make 3 types of claims – PF Withdrawal – Form 20, EPF Pension Claim – Form 10D, and Life Insurance Claim under EDLI Scheme – Form 51F.

But this online facility is subject to the that the PF member should have updated his nominee/beneficiary details under the e-Nomination link of the UAN member portal.

If the PF Member does not appoint any nominee, then his wife and children will be fully authorized to apply for PF withdrawal, pension benefit, and EDLI scheme benefit.

For this purpose, they will have to apply through Composite Form offline mode only and you may download here the same, as per your convenience.

Now EPF member’s nominee OR beneficiary can apply on the PF Member Portal online. Given below is the procedure for lodging a claim online:-

Step 1:The beneficiary or Nominee will have to click on the EPFO link  EPFO Member Portal

Step 2: Then click on the right side of the above PF Member Portal Screen,  in Important Links columns – ‘Death Claim filing by beneficiary‘.


Step3: As you will click on the above icon ‘Death claim filing by beneficiary’, a new webpage will open before you, as such

Step 4: Click on ‘Get Authorization Pin’. An authorization pin will be sent to the beneficiary’s OR Nominee’s Aadhaar linked mobile number.

Step 5: As soon as the beneficiary or Nominee submits the pin, a new webpage will be opened before you and you have to upload the Death Certificate of the PF Member, Bank Account Proof of Nominee or beneficiary, and  Date of Birth of Proof of Nominee OR beneficiary.

Step 6: On submission of the above documents online, your claim will be lodged successfully on the EPFO Portal.

Please note that a subscriber will have to submit the claim for withdrawal, pension, and EDLI scheme within 3 years from the death of the PF member.

After successfully lodging a claim, you will get a claim ID on your mobile and you can track the status of your claim by going to the claim section of the PF Member portal OR downloading the passbook section.
