11 Dishwasher Brands To Avoid & 5 Reliable Brands

Dishwasher brands to avoid
Dishwasher brands to avoid

A good dishwasher will not only clean your dirty and greasy dishes, but it will also save you water, electricity, and dishwashing time. That’s why it is important to choose a Good Dishwasher or we can say a reliable Brand!

But what if even after investing a lot of money, you got a bad dishwasher model.

Yes, it is possible, if you choose the wrong brand!!

That’s why so many people make an effort to buy a machine from a brand they trust. But, which brands do you trust? And more importantly, which should you avoid.

Here we have listed the dishwasher brands that must be avoided at any cost.

Is it Okay to go for an unbranded dishwasher?

Yeah, it might save your cash on a new machine, but it is not wise. Unbranded dishwashers are unbranded for a reason. Have a look at the 3 reasons why you should not get an unbranded dishwasher:

  1. Companies that try to sell their products without associating their name to them are not going to stand by their quality.
  2. Unbranded Dishwasher companies do not provide reliable customer support.
  3. Since it doesn’t have a specific name attached to it, you’re not going to be able to find replacement parts for it.

What should I look for when buying a dishwasher?

Dishwashers need a significant amount of money to get invested, financially speaking. As such, you do not want to base your decision on what to buy based on just looks and whim.

You must use our guide on dishwasher brands to avoid. To help you in narrowing down the best dishwasher choice for your home, here is a list of buying tips for you.

#Choose Your Look

Dishwashers are available in multiple colour tones like white, bisque, black, slate, stainless, and black stainless. Though these kitchen helpers once looked very uniform across brands, that is no longer the case.

In select models, the brand logo is also gone, and a recessed pocket handle replaces a bar. With brand names and bar handles gone, consumers may go with sleek, stainless dishwashers that match seamlessly with stainless appliances from other brands.

If you are looking for a more customized dishwasher that suits your kitchen frame exactly, then you must purchase a drawer design.

These models typically include two stacked drawers, giving you the option to use them simultaneously or separately. But they’re expensive, and the models we tested haven’t performed as well overall as most conventional dishwashers.

#Select the Price Tag

Dishwashers for $500 or Less

Although dishwashers in this price range are not top performers, still this is something you can rely upon easily. Under this budget, you can find a good dishwasher that’s excellent at cleaning, and very good or even excellent at drying.

Most dishwashers, including lower-priced models, now have a soil sensor. It adjusts the cycle’s time and water use to the load’s soil level, improving water efficiency.

The features you get in these dishwashers are basic where you get adjustable racks and stainless steel tubs are not a given, and most dishwashers in this price range are relatively noisy.

Dishwashers for $500 to $1,000
You can get a quieter machine, superb cleaning, and convenient features that must make it worth spending a bit more, such as adjustable racks and flexible flatware slots, along with a stainless tub, which tends to resist stains better than plastic.

Dishwashers for $1,000 or More
Features like wifi connectivity and special wash zones for heavily soiled items are added. The styling changes and the dishwashers are fully loaded.

#Handles

Dishwasher handles come in a variety of styles, including recessed, pocket and bar handles. Recessed and pocket handles make it easy to clean the front of your dishwasher.

#Interior finish

Dishwashers internally come in either stainless steel or plastic. While dishwashers with stainless steel tubs usually cost more than a plastic tub model, they can help reduce energy costs because they retain heat longer, making dishes dry faster.

They are also more durable, more stain-resistant and more odour-resistant than plastic. Plastic tubs are mainly found in affordable dishwashers that are also very durable.

#Flexibility

Removable racks and adjustable shelves make it easy to customize tub space to accommodate oversized dishes, pots and pans.

#Check the Cleanability/Performance

Clean and sanitize dishes with advanced wash options.

  • Varying wash type (waterwall, rotary spray, high-pressure jets)
  • Targeted wash areas
  • Steam clean
  • Bottle jets
  • Hard food disposer
  • Built-in water softener
  • Built-in water heater

#Quiet Operation

If you’re upgrading from an older model, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how much quieter dishwashers are available today than used to be. With some, you can barely hear them while they are running.

Check the decibel level to understand how quietly a dishwasher perform. A rank of 45 or lower is practically silent. Decibel levels between 45 and 50 sound similar to rainfall. Ratings of 50 or higher are equivalent to the level of a normal conversation.

The quietest dishwashers on the market today come in at between 38 dB and 48 dB. We consider anything under 49 dB acceptable since the loudest parts of the cycle are quick. You want under 46 dB, or, even better, under 44 dB.

#Energy Efficient

ENERGY STAR® certified dishwashers use less water and less energy than other models. You may be eligible for local rebates when buying ENERGY STAR certified appliances.

#Controlling System

  • Front-panel controls are fully visible and installed on the front of the dishwasher door. This control design makes it convenient to see the settings and status of the dishwasher while in operation.
  • Top-control dishwashers have the control panel installed on the head of the door. The panel is invisible when the door is closed, yielding the appliance a clean, flush look. There may be lights on the exterior of the dishwasher to indicate the appliance is operating or that the wash is complete.
  • Semi-hidden controls are also available. These are mounted on the front of the door in a recessed handle.

#Sensors

Dishwashers equipped with sensors guarantee the most efficient performance for cleaning and energy savings.

  • Water sensors ensure an adequate amount of water in the machine for proper cleaning.
  • Soil level sensors adjust wash cycle times.
  • Leak sensors help stop water damage to your floors.
  • Detergent sensors allow the release of the demanded amount of dishwashing liquid into the wash cycle.
  • Temperature sensors maintain proper water temperature.

Disclaimer

All of the below-mentioned brands are not completely the worst. However, these brands have some low-quality products on the market too.

It shows, they are also not resistant to providing bad dishwasher models. So you need to be aware of these substandard models before making a perfect buying.

11 dishwasher brands to avoid

  1. Frigidaire
  2. JennAir
  3. Fisher & Paykel
  4. Viking
  5. SPT Dishwashers
  6. Electrolux
  7. Miele
  8. LG
  9. Samsung
  10. Bosch Benchmark
  11. Danby

Curious about why people have been having a rough time with them?

Let’s get started!

1. Frigidaire

How a brand can be remarked as good when its users are not satisfied with it all? No doubt, Frigidaire is a top-rated brand on the market associated with a large customer base. However, along with their satisfied customers, there is a huge list of dissatisfied users.

Poor After-Sale Service & High Repairing Costs

Firstly, many customers complain about this brand. Due to bad customer service, it’s not easy to get adequate after-sale service. The result can be out of your control and the dishwasher needs to be repaired at a very high cost.

Higher Reliability But Poor Ratings

Frigidaire really possesses higher reliability ranks notwithstanding being the parent company of Electrolux. So in terms of reliability, you definitely can expect the best from this company.

So, what’s the issue with Frigidaire, you think?

It’s the customer support that users get. Its users have claimed that the company’s cooperation is extremely hard to get a hold of, and that customer service reps often don’t appear educated about their own merchandise.

Worst Built Quality

We didn’t expect bad feedback about Frigidaire dishwashers. But it is true! People have reported a number of defects in its dishwashers like it has a flimsy door and its springs came out in a few months.

Its trays are not smooth and it doesn’t dry dishes well. The worst thing customers claimed is that the interior is made of plastic which is bad. Not just that it is a little noisy that may annoy you.

2. JennAir

JennAir presents higher-end dishwasher models with mid-range features while also costing more than other brands with the same build quality.

JennAir has a very limited range of models with almost the same features, not alluring people to spend more money on their products.

PASSIONSCAFE do not recommend dishwashers from this brand due to

  • The fact that over a third of customers had problems within a year means that this is a major No to go for it.
  • If you want a reliable dishwasher, don’t go for it.
  • This brand generated mixed results. At one end, it is rated reliable but there is another half claiming it is not.

Spent $15,000.00 on appliances with them. The Control panel went out in the dishwasher a month ago! I still have no dishwasher and customer service could care less! No timeline even when it will be fixed.

Every time I call they act like they have no clue what is going. They are so rude one lady said she washed dishes by hand so did not see the urgency and another rep said I lost my magic wand.

It is a shame to spend that much money with no solution and washing dishes by hand. They could care less. (Source: Consumeraffairs.com)

Final Thought on Jennair

This is a brand you are better off avoiding as they lack a good customer support which is indeed part. Also, there is flauty system claimed by many of its customers. So it is advised to avoid this dishwasher brand.

3. Fisher & Paykel

dishwasher brands to avoid

How anyone can expect a bad performance from a trustworthy brand like Fisher and Paykel but real experiences from customers are totally opposite to this.

Not a tiny percentage, but 26% of all F&P dishwashers have been reported to have faulty controls and needed repair in less than a year. F&P dishwashers have been rejected by the customers due to its

Faulty Control System

The F&P has a number of imperfections, one of which is its endurance. Like Bosch, Fisher & Paykel, dishwashers need repair within the first 6 months of buying.

High Repair Costs

Purchasing a Fisher & Paykel dishwasher could mean spending more of your time fixing problems than actually using it. Repairs will cost more than those by other companies which means more money out of your pocket.

Imperfection in the work

One of the most problems reported by the customers is its imperfect cleaning. The dishwashers by this brand do not clean dishes well. Occasionally, sounds might be heard while the water is being drained.

Great concept; terrible dishwasher

Purchased in July 2019 for $2,799.00.

Have owned this dishwasher for two years and had issues with both top and bottom draw not washing well if at all. I have tried numerous Finish Powerball /Quantum tablets recommended for this dishwasher with no change in the quality of the wash. (Source: productreview.com.au)

Has a few gremlins

Published

I previously had a series 6 dish drawer and loved it. It lasted ten years, and I had to replace the actuators once which was an easy task. A very easy machine to service.

The series 9 on the other hand has a few gremlins. For example:
My bottom drawer (and intermittently the top drawer refuses to fully close as the hoses at the back foul on the cabinet.

The bottom drawer sometimes turns itself on when the top drawer is operating – presumably, the touch-sensitive pad is a little too sensitive.

I can’t find any help online about the hose issue and so I am looking at a service call and I am probably just out of warranty. It’s a shame because I was a real fan of my old series 6 dish drawer. (Source: productreview.com.au)

Final Thought on Fishing & Paykel

Not all, but most of its models have compelled to get worried for their service. Also, these are also costing more than other brands with the same build quality. It is good to avoid this dishwasher brand.

4. Viking

Viking is a top and the most prominent home appliances brand, especially in the US. It is a mainstream brand for refrigerators and freezers but when it comes to dishwashers, it is not what you think.

As a matter of fact, a survey done by consumer reports revealed that those who owned Viking dishwashers expressed the most regret and frustration over their dishwashers just a few months after installation. Its rating is so low that taking a chance on it no matter how your mind insists would just be irrational.

According to a survey conducted by MSN, Viking, Electrolux, and Samsung dishwashers received our lowest rating for reliability—a Poor. Because of that, PASSIONSCAFE cannot recommend dishwashers from this brand.

The Dishwasher is high maintenance and breaks down causing replacement early. It requires weekly cleaning of the filter despite pre-rinsing any item you wash in it. It doesn’t matter how nicely you treating, it breaks down and will leave you replacing it early. NEVER again.

Like the other reviewers have said this dishwasher is complete garbage. My biggest issue is it doesn’t have a heating element! Aside from not washing dishes, it doesn’t dry them either. It also runs for 4 HOURS at a time yet it’s supposed to be “energy efficient”?! Laughable. Going to get a kitchen aid or some other brand that actually works.

5. SPT Dishwashers

Being one of the cheapest dishwasher brands, it must be avoided at any cost. The built quality is totally poor and the interior part looks flimsy. Yes, what’s the point of being budget-conscious if you are not happy with the performance?

Reviews by Original Buyers

Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2019

Sure glad I did because it just doesn’t work well. If you never wash anything but plates, bowls and flatware this might work for you. In a test of two separate loads, every glass and mason jar I washed came out dirtier than it went in as particles from other dishes were deposited on them.

The water was strong enough to push these particles up inside the glasses and jars so they stuck to the bottom but were not strong enough to rinse them away. I returned it and am carefully researching Whirlpool and GE’s models.

6. Electrolux

dishwasher brands to avoid

You might be lured by the sleek, stainless steel surface of the dishwashers by Electrolux, but as a matter of fact, it is one of the dishwasher brands that have consistently taken a ‘POOR’ rating from Consumer Reports in the last five years.

Cheap Both Brand & Built Quality

As per the data shared by Consumer Reports, this brand holds on the most inferior product rating and owner satisfaction rating of all dishwasher brands. These cheap dishwashers end up costing you a lot of money at the end of the day.

High Costs & Not Energy Efficient

What if you got the fault and cheap dishwasher at the price you must get the best one.  For the very high price tag, this is a dishwasher brand you should avoid.

This is not an energy-efficient dishwasher as it uses more energy due to its 190 minute run time. Field reports say it is at least at 45dB (which is likened to bird calls). And in contrast to their energy-efficient labelling, it levels electric bill costs.

Poor Performance

When it comes to reliability, this poor-performing dishwasher brand ranks at the top. It has a control panel which is said to have stopped working at the 10-12th month. A loud noise of 45 dBA is quite intolerable which it produces in operation.

7. Miele

dishwasher brands to avoid

No doubt, Miele is one of the popular brands when it comes to dishwashers. But is it actually reliable and long-lasting?

A number of surveys revealed that about 15% of Miele Dishwashers need repair within the first year.

Miele is a trustworthy brand, Still, it is a brand to Avoid

When it comes to dishwashers, they seem to be having a bad time. 15% of all buyers had problems with their dishwashers. This is terrifying for a company that’s known for quality and reliability.

High Repair Costs

Their dishwashers have a good lifespan but might need frequent repairs as we showed you above.

There are statements that the controls within Miele dishwashers can fail, which is perhaps an even greater risk when you consider how these models cost so much more than similar units of other brands.

Low Ratings and Poor Support Services

Their poor rating is also because of their bad customer service. Anecdotal evidence points to impolite sales agents and a lack of action from the company after filing complaints.

8. LG

dishwasher brands to avoid

You may be startled to see the signature of LG in our list of the worst dishwasher brands. It is true that LG doesn’t need any recognition about their appliances, but the dishwashers from the LG are not worth buying.

The company has launched a number of models of dishwashers with advanced technology. Water efficiency, energy efficiency, Quad Wash, Wi-Fi operation and 14 place settings are top features.

However, notwithstanding having these traits in their dishwashers, LG is yet to satisfy its customers. LG dishwashers have the following downsides:

Its Puzzeling Features

Yes, LG gives you a number of features that helps you to get the work more than easier, but its extra smart features might puzzle you and lead to serious trouble while fixing.

Low Standard Customer Service

Its horrible and low standard customer service has convinced us to list this brand over here.

Dishwashers are not good as their other appliances

LG is a well-known brand in electronics in the national and international markets. It is a company that makes almost 57 billion U.S. Dollars due to its reliable and long-lasting appliances. But when it comes to dishwashers, it is something where the company has failed.

Poor Build Quality

Build quality of Dishwashers by LG brand is totally inferior. To me personally, LG has the worst build quality. Not just me, but after reviewing so many reviews of LG dishwashers, I concluded that very few customers had a satisfactory experience with LG dishwashers. Yes “Very Few customers”

9. Samsung

dishwasher brands to avoid

Many people use Samsung due to the brand name, but are their dishwashers worth it?

Some people would disagree and recommend Samsung among dishwasher brands to avoid. These are the most common problems users faced while operating Samsung dishwashers:

Error Code

The error code often appears in the Samsung dishwasher brand. That’s always an indication that there’s a problem and constantly fixing it is expensive.

Pump Motor Failure

Due to numerous leakages, the pump motor keeps failing. The dishwasher has multiple faulty components, which make the matter worse.

Doesn’t Clean Effectively

A dishwasher is supposed to clean the dishes and ensure they come out looking much better. But, the brand is picky about what to clean and can make dishes dirtier.

Leaking Problem

The dishwasher had manufacturing flaws that cause it to leak water in your kitchen. Even after fixing it, the problem persists, which is pretty frustrating.

We read numberless reviews of Samsung dishwashers online like on kitchenreview.com, consumeraffairs.com and also got feedback from the market. and some of the most relevant has been listed below.

Reviews by Orginal Buyers

Bought this Samsung dishwasher 7 months ago and began getting error code 5C (clogged drain). I completed the troubleshooting per manual, found no-clog, called Samsung for warranty service. One hour and a half wait so I set up a callback.

The agent called back, said she was not in the dishwasher dept. and sent me back to call back and disconnected me. Set up another callback, the same thing, since I purchased it from Costco I am returning it and buying a different brand, this is by far the worst service I have ever had…NO MORE SAMSUNG ANYTHING.

Final Thought on Samsung

Finally, when it comes to dishwashers, Samsung has hugely disappointed its users due to their poor performance and reliability. Still, there are some good dishwasher models by Samsung that you are absolutely good to go.

10. Bosch Benchmark

dishwasher brands to avoid

Bosch is a famous brand as a prominent home appliances company but this might come as a shocker because when it comes to dishwashers, they might not be the most trustworthy. For one, they are not very energy efficient. The runtime is more than 2hrs or longer, additionally, it consumes a lot of water at every run.

Why Customer Disliked it?

High Service Ratio

A survey done by Yale Appliance revealed that they only had a 35.7% efficiency rating. Only 70 units were sold during the study and 25 of them needed to be serviced or repaired within those 12 months.

Poor Reliability

The most significant issue with their dishwashers is the reliability. After 6-7 months of use, you will need expensive repairs and servicing. As per a rough estimate, there is a 34% failure rate of Bosch dishwashers.

Build Quality is not Sturdy

The build quality is not sturdy compared to the price. Its dishwashers have a poor rack design, which means no space for casseroles, bowls, cookie sheets, etc. Sometimes the door is hard to open and close. Even it doesn’t dry dishes properly.

After reviewing the Bosch SHE3AR75UC, it got various complaints from its users. It is a 24 inches built-in dishwasher with a full console from the Bosch 100 Series. Its features include 6 Wash Cycles, Sanitize Option, 14-Place Settings, Delay Start, and more.

11. Danby

Danby is another least reliable brand that makes cheap quality dishwashers on the market. While reviewing, we got a negative response from the consumer for Danby.

Their dishwashers are not the very expensive ones on the market. But the trade-off between price and quality is not liked by the users.

5 Best & Most Reliable Dishwasher Brands

1. Thermador

Thermador is a more luxury brand dishwasher and has usually a higher price point. The models reviewed here vary from $1400 to $1800. Some models are even higher.

If you’re worried about customer service, don’t be. Their satisfaction rates are through the roof.

2. Maytag Dishwashers

Maytag dishwashers are another good brand to consider. This is a well-known brand for its reliable and long lifespan appliances Their dishwashers are a good value for money.

In addition, their after-sales service is excellent. There are plenty of online resources including the company’s website, forums, reviews on Amazon, etc as well as in-person help so you’ll never be stuck for answers if you run into any issues.

Its mission to maintain a green image is commendable as it uses recycled materials in its packaging so it’s easy to support its efforts to maintain.

3. GE (General Electric)

best dishwasher brand

GE has been around us as a well-established brand with a commendable reputation in the market for its most reliable appliances including dishwashers.

Conclusion

During our analysis, we found that the most prevalent issue with all top-tier companies is their after-sale customer service.

Most of the brands would be nice to you when you are making a purchase. But after the purchase, they become inhuman and don’t accept even valid claims from the consumers.

So, we highly recommend you pick the brand with excellent customer support.
